a walk home

my friend c is town for his grandmother's funeral this week. we caught up for the first time since january, got vietnamese food and then walked around the post-corona deserted streets of marrickville - autumn has hit and it's finally crisp and chilly at night. we walked to the closed library, it was huge and bright, like the full moon when the rest of the city is in total darkness. there was a group of cool kids break dancing to an absent audience. it was pretty rad. we tried to climb over the fence to the kids playground to no avail. the big yellow kangaroo had a black mask on and it was cute. then we walked to the other end of the road where woollies is. we peeled off a neo-nazi sticker on the way and talked about all the fun we had in san francisco 3 years ago.
my friend said he would be visiting in 3 months time again, so that's something to look forward to.
he told me he'd like to move back to sydney next year, i really hope he does. i miss having him around, it's been 2 years already since he moved to victoria and this city just hasn't been the same since.
walking back home, i stepped on so many autumn leaves. i thought about how much my friend means to me. how much i love this city. some things we just can't afford to take for granted.
